As an interaction designer who was looking to understand the basics of graphic and visual design, I found The Non-Designer's Design Book to be a great overview. It's approachable (if a little cheesy), but also clearly lays out the core concepts with concrete examples. As it turns out, the basic principles of typography are an important component of great graphic design. Hence the reason why I recommend this compilation. While the typography book isn't quite as strong as the design one, it's good and sufficient to give you a solid foundation.
I recommend this book to all of my interaction designer colleagues, as well as product managers, developers, and marketers. While this book alone won't make anyone a designer, it's a good start. And it helps make my life as a designer easier when the people I work with are more sensitive to basic design issues.
