Best USB computer keyboard: Apple aluminum keyboard

Apple-aluminum-keyboard.jpg

I love my Apple aluminum keyboard. The flat keys, short travel, and ample margins between the keys make it the easiest keyboard I've found to type on. Plus it is quiet. No loud clicking to distract me from the thoughts I'm typing.

Of course the annoying thing is that it's designed to work with Macs. Still, that doesn't stop me from plugging it in and using it with my Windows PC. The only real difference is the Command key sends a Windows key event. Personally, I use the SharpKeys utility to remap my keys so that the Command key on the keyboard sends Ctrl and vice-versa.

You can also get a narrower version without the number pad on the right. This gives you a bit more space to operate your mouse on the right without straining your arm way out to the side. (I keep my mouse on the left, so I don't have this issue.)

Best backup storage: La Cie d2 Quadra external hard drive

la-cie-d2-quadra.jpgI recently outgrew my old external hard drive and needed to get a bigger one. While there are plenty of deals out there on external hard drives—including ones that cost $100 or less—I opted for a higher quality option.

ConsumerSearch.com gave La Cie's d2 Quadra the nod. It's highly rated by both reviewers and owners. But more importantly, it has fewer negative reviews than most. The company has a good history of reliability, the drives quiet (no fan!), and they have USB, eSATA, and FireWire connectors.

I went for the 1TB capacity (which I think is the best value right now), but they come in ½TB, 1½TB and 2TB capacities as well.

Best internet broadband service: Sonic.net DSL

I've been through my share of internet service providers over the years. I started with Earthlink dialup, then Telocity DSL, Comcast cable, and most recently, Cyberonic DSL. It was reliable and tech support was good. But at $50/month for 3/.75 mbps, I knew I was overpaying -- especially since I no longer needed static IP addresses.

I did extensive research on the broadband options and ended up concluding what my geeky friend David Creemer had already figured out: Sonic.net had the best service out there for the money. They have multiple tiers of service available, including a bare-bones plan for only $15/month. I splurged for the Elite plan and get 6/.75 mbps for $35/month. I doubled my download speed from what I had at Cyberonic, and I'm saving $15/month.

The service and support has been excellent so far, too. My new DSL was installed and working 3 days after I ordered it. And when I needed help getting the modem working with my Linksys wireless router, the phone support guy happily walked me through the necessary steps.

If you do order DSL from Sonic, I'd appreciate it if you use my ID as the referral: davecort.

Best laptop: Apple MacBook

macbook.jpgApple makes the best laptops out there. period. They are beautifully-designed, high-quality, and a great value (price/performance). While I have a MacBook Pro, most people don't need the extras that the Pro incudes (larger screen, bigger hard drive, more graphics memory) at the cost of nearly doubling the price. However I do recommend that you don't buy the cheapest MacBook. The DVD writer, extra memory, and extra hard drive space will all be things you'll grow into and be glad you got after a few years.

Of course one of the main selling points of the Mac is that it runs Mac OS X -- widely considered to be friendlier and easier to use than Windows. The visual design is lighter, simpler, and polished to a high shine. For basic Internet use, music, photos and other basic consumer tasks, the Mac shines. And as an amatuer musician, GarageBand is a fantastic application. There is nothing like it on the PC at any price.

However if you need to run Windows, your MacBook can do it. You can boot directly into Windows using the free Boot Camp utility provided by Apple. Or you can get virtual machine (VM) software—Parallels Desktop or VMware Fusion—and run Windows as a separate application within Mac OS X. I've done both, but lately I prefer the latter as I only need Windows occasionally. Ironically, PC World reported in October 2007 that the MacBook Pro was the fastest Windows laptop that they tested. On the down side, there is no dedicated second mouse button or forward delete key, but you can work around these with a two-finger touch pad + click and fn+delete respectively.
